Summer 2020: Intro to the Interns (Part 3: Carlos and Samuel)

  • by

During the month of July 2020, Javilud hosted two high school students through local non-profit organization, Family Service. Family Service coordinates the 2020 Youth Summer Internship Program, an annual program that prepares and places young interns in professional job settings. The program is open to youth between the ages of 14-17 years old who live within San Antonio’s city council districts 1-10. Despite COVID-19, Family Service provided virtual professional development training and placement for 150 student interns.

Our two student team members, Carlos and Samuel, came highly recommended from Family Service program managers. Both students were eager to learn, and provided valuable contributions on website development, graphic designs, social media content, business development, lead generation, and communication. The students worked part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week for a total of 80 hours within their four-week internship period. The students were paid a stipend through Family Service, which made this internship possible for a small company like ours.

We highly recommend Family Service’s youth summer internship program to all students and employers. Please contact Sara Santiago at Family Service to ensure that your organization is on the must-contact list for summer 2021.

Note: In full transparency, our CEO serves on the Board of Directors for Family Service.

Hi, my name is Carlos. I just finished high school at Memorial High School, and, this fall, I will be an incoming freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I joined this internship at Javilud to learn communications skills, time management time skills, and leadership skills. Some things I have learned so far are being able to lead a team meeting, how to use a spreadsheet and how to communicate with my fellow interns. One thing I’d hope to accomplish is new networking skills throughout the internship. Some examples of careers that I want to apply for are computer programmer, software designer, and security software developer.

Hello, my name is Samuel. I am currently a senior in John F. Kennedy High school. One of the things that I had expected to learn from this internship with Javilud was to get more experience in a professional workplace in the form of learning new communication skills, leadership skills, and business management skills. A few of the things that I have learned in with Javilud is how to communicate with my fellow interns by having the opportunity of becoming a team leader for team meetings. One of the things I would’ve never thought that would be so useful was to learn more about Google and its Google Email. I have been shocked at how important it is to know how to navigate yourself through it, especially to communicate. One of the things that I want to accomplish in this internship is how to be able to manage my own business. Because that’s what I want to do: I want to have my own car dealership and real estate business company. One of the colleges / universities that I am really looking forward to applying for is the Milwaukee School Of Engineering. They have a really good business program/ endorsement and it is really intriguing for me to learn more about that career path.
